After leaving Duluth area, we ventured south to La Crosse, Wisconsin- a town that sits right on the Mighty Mississippi River. Stayed at a working farm Bed and Breakfast, the Rainbow Ridge Farm- run by a couple of dedicated women. They had about 50 goats, and a variety of chickens, ducks turkeys cats and more. At Grand Dads bluff, saw an excellent overview of the river- and it was where Ilea saved an unattended 2 year old who was running wildly toward the parking lot !
Went to a Franciscan chapel where sisters have been praying for 138 years STRAIGHT, NON-STOP! Sister MELINDA gave us a private tour where each stained glass window have been appraised at a million dollars! She gave us a harp serenade at the tours finale. Ate "Armidillo Eggs" at Buzzard Billy's Flying Carp Cafe (They had REAL taxidermied Carp hanging from ceiling fans, flying overhead)... BTW, these eggs are really not eggs- they are jalapeno poppers wrapped by first a chicken nugget, then again by bacon... dipped / breaded and fried AND Delicious!
From there, drove a very scenic ride along Hwy 61 which overlooks the Mississippi river.... arrived at Minneapolis on Sunday 7/31. Stayed at Millenium Hotel- where it looked like a bomb went off (major road and building construction going on immediately outside, surrounding the hotel...) They have a system of SKYWAYS (enclosed corridors for walkers to get from building to building in the nasty cold winter months) Witnessed the iconic MALL OF AMERICAS (and bought.... NOTHING!) Mall is four stories and generally square shaped and kind of like a stadium- where the CENTER is an amusement park. We did bike around the Chain of Lakes (Lake of the Isles, Calhoun Lake and Harriet Lake) where some awesome huge mansions are located... the bike paths are phenomenal, rated among THE BEST in the USA (Paved and separate from the WALK ways) . Ate at an Ecuadorian Restaurant and Hell's Kitchen- which served an incredible Porridge and a Sausage Bread... Heading to the Minneapolis airport today, 8/2 for a trip home to Florida for baby shower for grand daughter to soon be, Emma!
